The lake has an area of 48 km ², of which about 18 km ² belonging to the Italian Republic and 30km ² belonging to Switzerland.
The deepest point (288 meters) is located in the upper basin, between the Swiss and Italian border, a few kilometers from Gandria. The lake has a form very intricate due to its glacial origin. The three main tributaries are the Cassarate, which flows near the city center of Lugano, Vedeggio, which flows into the Gulf of Agno and Cuccio, which enters the lake near Porlezza. From its western branch starts the river Tresa, which flows into Lake Maggiore.
